Let’s get real for a second—when was the last time someone asked you, the parent, how you’re doing? Not your kid, not the daycare workers, not anyone else. I mean you—the person running the show, trying to juggle it all. We’re talking about the parents who wake up early, stay up late, and are constantly checking boxes off that never-ending to-do list.
Here’s the truth that no one seems to want to admit: The best outcomes for our kids don’t come from the latest educational trend or the fanciest daycare center. No. They come from you—and from the support you get. The more childcare providers (and the world in general) back you up, the better your child’s experience is going to be.
The Support We Need
As parents, we’re expected to know it all. We have to be the experts in child development, meal prep, and scheduling, all while keeping our own mental health intact. It’s exhausting. But here’s the kicker: If the people we entrust our kids to aren’t backing us up, how can we possibly succeed? The daycare or preschool your child spends their time in should not be compartmentalized—it should be a place that supports you, too.
When childcare providers offer things like open communication, flexible hours, and resources for parents, they aren’t just doing you a favor. They’re doing a favor to the kids, too. When parents are supported, they’re able to focus more on their children, and no daycare can replace that bond. Happier, less stressed parents are way more likely to be present and engaged in their children’s growth, which, spoiler alert: directly benefits their development.
It’s Not Just About Your Kid, It’s About You Too
We’re constantly told that “it’s all about the kids.” But honestly? If we keep pretending that parents don’t need help, we’re doing everyone a disservice. Parents take on too much alone. Let me say that again: when we feel supported, our kids benefit.
That’s where Harwell School steps in. We recognize that parenting is a full-time job that doesn’t come with the luxury of a manual. And while we’re nurturing your child’s growth in every possible way, we’re also making sure that you have all the resources you need to thrive as well.
Here’s what we provide:
- Summer Health: Through our relationship with Summer Health, we go beyond typical telemedicine. We provide access to pediatricians, behavioral specialists, pediatric nutritionists, and sleep consultants. So not only is your child getting the support they need to thrive at Harwell, but you’ve got the most convenient access to experts available—no more searching for specialists or waiting on appointments. This means a healthier, more balanced life for your child and, ultimately, for your whole family.
- Personal Concierge Services : We understand that life is hectic, Harwell School offered a complimentary parent personal concierge service through Yohana through December of 2024. The goal? To help you spend less time running errands and more time with your child. Whether it was scheduling doctor’s appointments or handling grocery orders, we’ve got you covered. Parents can now experience similar support through the propensity of AI agents that have come to market, and so we have discontinued offering parents this service ourselves.!
- Digital Access to Our Curriculum: We know that being a parent doesn’t end when you drop your child off at school, and it’s important for you to be part of their learning journey. At Harwell, we offer digital access to our curriculum, so you can follow along with what your child is learning throughout the day. And if you want to continue the learning at home, we’ve made sure you have the tools to do that, too.
- Photos Throughout the Day: We know how hard it is to be away from your child during the day, especially when you miss out on the little moments. That's why we send photos throughout the day—so you can stay connected and share in those special milestones, even if you’re not physically there.
- One-on-One Meetings with Your Child’s Teacher: At Harwell, we believe that communication is key. That’s why we offer one-on-one meetings with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress and collaborate on the best ways to care for them. This isn’t just about ticking off the boxes; it’s about making sure we’re aligned and doing everything we can to support your child’s unique needs.
The Real Conversation We Should Be HavingSo, let’s stop the cycle of saying "I’m fine" when we’re barely hanging on. Let’s encourage daycares and preschools to start asking parents the hard questions and offering real solutions. Here’s what I want to see more of:
- Daily Check-ins: You’ve got a million things going on, and so do we. But that quick check-in at pickup or drop-off lets us know how we can help you keep crushing it. Whether it’s a concern about your child’s behavior or just needing advice, we’re here for you.
- Parent Resources: Sure, some daycares teach your kid colors and shapes, but how about helping you learn the best ways to navigate picky eaters or deal with toddler tantrums? Early childhood providers who offer parenting workshops or resources are absolute game-changers. It’s not just about your kid—it’s about you becoming the best version of yourself as a parent.
- Training in Emotional Regulation: This year, our teachers will be taking special training in teaching emotional regulation beyond the typical training beyond state licensing requirements. We understand that raising a child is an emotional journey—and that means we need to be prepared to help both you and your child navigate it
Why This Matters
I never believed that parents don’t need support. We do. We need it just as much as our kids need it at times. And when childcare providers step up and really back us up, that’s when we see the real magic happen. Not just for us as parents, but for our kids, too.The reality is, our kids can’t thrive if we’re struggling. When we get the support we need—whether it's through open communication, understanding, or even just a little grace—we’re in a better place to raise healthy, happy children. We’re in a better place to be present. And let’s be real, that’s what we all want: to show up and be the best parents we can be.At Harwell School, we’re not just about teaching your child; we’re about supporting your whole family. Because when you thrive, they thrive.
